What Are Swimming Points?

World Aquatics Points turn a swim time into a score for a specific event, making performances easier to compare across strokes, distances, genders, and courses.

Terminology

The governing body currently calls its system World Aquatics Points; older references may call it FINA Points. Read the Swimming points guide for more detail.

Calculation Method

The swimming points formula compares a swimmer time with the official base time for the same event:

P = 1000 × (B / T)^3

P = points, B = base time, and T = swimmer time. Both B and T are measured in seconds. The formula result is truncated to a whole number. Matching the base time equals 1000 points, while faster swims produce higher scores. World Aquatics sets base times for each scoring period using the latest approved world records, with separate periods for SCM and LCM. Official base times are maintained on the official World Aquatics Swimming Points page.

How to Use This Calculator

Select an event, then enter a swim time to calculate points or enter points to estimate the race time needed for that score.
